  2. My top tip for sewing with flannel is to clean out your machine often! You can't believe the fuzz it can put under your bobbin case. This flannel looks especially cozy and I'd love to make some baby quilts with it :)

  3. What a lovely giveaway. I've never used flannel but my grandson, who has Down's Syndrome, is ready for a new quilt and I think it would be wonderful to use flannel for it, the texture of it would be interesting for him and the warmth would be appreciated with winter on it's way. Thank you for the chance to win.

  16. Oh they're lovely..! My first thought was to make a quilt to keep warm and cozy on the sofa, but I might treat myself properly and make a scarf - beautiful soft flannel, lined with soft jersey maybe.. Hmmm. Just for me. I like that..!

  26. For a while I have been wanting to make some cuddly birds- these patterns would look great. That's what I would do- some fat roosting pigeons cooing at you from a corner of a sofa or on a bed, with some button eyes, or felt ones to make the whole thing soft and huggable. Or wise, patterned owls hooting from their perch, snuggled on a shelf. Then I would line them all up and photograph them!
    Thanks!

  28. I would definitely make some cosy underwear, especially a vest. I haven't tried flannel yet. Lovely fabrics.

  29. I have not used flannel before but I have heard it makes beautiful 'raggy blankets'. You use a technique where you stitch lines, cut between the gaps and then wash a few times to get a real snuggly effect...very popular in America apparently. So, as my baby is due in December...I'd love to make him or her some of these comforter blankets just in time for Christmas!

  30. The prints look so great!!
I would sew a nice small flannel quilt for my new nephew.

  32. They look so lovely - I'd make pyjama pants, to snuggle away the day in. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would try my hand at a rag quilt. I have not worked with flannel much. I've heard wash it first, and then I've heard not to wash it because it gets too soft, then I heard wash it then starch it before sewing...etc. So I'm so glad you're asking for tips. I will be back to read all of them! Thank you for hosting this cozy giveaway!

  41. wow, that's the most beautiful flannel I've ever seen! I am expecting my 3rd child in a few weeks time, and would make a lovely cosy blanket should I win. I've never sewn with flannel before, but have heard that it can shrink by as much as 13% - so pre-washing on a very hot setting is a must.

  50. I love your flannel selections! I prefer using flannel to fleece for babies and children under three because it's safer when they put it in their mouths. Also, it's so easy to wash and gets softer with each wash.

    ReplyDelete
  51. it would have to be a big cosy quilt for us all to snuggle under now its getting colder in the evenings. Having never sewn with flannel i really need to read all the other tips that people are posting.

  52. Top tip is to prewash and damp dry the flannel because it can shrink. Second, remove from dryer damp dry and iron it to zap the wrinkles. Check it to get a feel for any ravels so can handle seam allowances. Flannel is nice for backing baby quilts or piecing quilt. If win, would use this for making items for my (two to be born later this year) grandnieces. Thanks for the giveaway.

  76. OOOhh I've been looking for flannels to make a raggedy edge quilt for in my camper van. These retro fabrics look just perfect to snuggle under on a chilly night. I'd use 1" seam then cut and frey the edges. The full "raveling" effect will only show after washing the quilt.

  86. Okay...I was in such a hurry to make sure I entered in time to qualify for this AWESOME giveaway, I didn't read that you wanted to know what we would do with it. So here's my revised post, and then I'll delete the other.

I LOVE using flannel, it's my favorite fabric to work with. I've been making charity quilts for children in the burn center of the hospital, and flannel is the softest fabric (which is VERY important when you're dealing with burns). I would love to use this beautiful fabric to make more quilts for the kids.

Tips...the only thing I have to say about flannel is that it stretches differently
than regular broadcloth. I've experienced different PRINTS stretch differently, and it stretched different by direction.

    Thanks for a wonderful giveaway!

    ~Teresa :)
